Mercedes-Benz India Rolls Out 200,000th ‘Made in India’ Car, Celebrates Major Milestone

New Delhi — Mercedes-Benz India has reached a significant milestone, rolling out its 200,000th locally produced vehicle from its Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune. The historic car, an EQS SUV, was unveiled by Dr. Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, alongside Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India.

This achievement highlights the rapid growth of the company’s local production capabilities and its long-term commitment to the Indian market. Mercedes-Benz India took 19 years to produce its first 50,000 cars (1995–2014), then added 100,000 more in the next decade. In the past two years, the company has produced 50,000 cars, reflecting a sharp acceleration in production to meet the rising demand for luxury vehicles in the country.

Mercedes-Benz India’s Chakan plant has been a pioneer in local manufacturing, being the first facility outside Germany to produce the Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015. The plant also led the way in the luxury electric vehicle transition, with the local production of the EQS 580 sedan in 2022 and the EQS 580 SUV in 2024.

The plant is also 100% powered by renewable energy since 2022, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz India’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Today, it produces 11 locally manufactured models, making it the only luxury carmaker in India to offer such a wide range of locally produced luxury vehicles.

The company has invested over Rs 3,000 crore in its Indian operations, the highest by any luxury carmaker in India, with an additional Rs 200 crore in fresh investment in 2024. This investment supports the growing demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and strengthens the company’s manufacturing footprint in the region.

Santosh Iyer said, “The production facility has played a critical role in our success, allowing us to cater to the growing market demand for our products. We are committed to expanding our footprint in India and continuing our investments in this important market.”

Mercedes-Benz India also boasts the largest luxury car retail network in the country, with over 100 luxury touchpoints across 50+ cities. In 2024, the brand retailed a record 19,565 cars, achieving its “Best Year Ever” in its 30-year history in India. As the company moves into 2025, it aims to continue exceeding customer expectations through enhanced luxury experiences and expanded electric vehicle offerings.
