On Cam: Mob Brutally Canes Woman Outside Karnataka Mosque After Husband's Plaint Against Her; 6 Held

A video has surfaced on social media showing a 38-year-old woman being violently assaulted by a mob outside a mosque in Davanagere, Karnataka. The attack allegedly occurred after the victim's husband filed a complaint against her at the local mosque regarding a domestic dispute.

What Happened?

The victim, Shabina Banu, works as a domestic help and lives in Davanagere. On April 7, she received a visit from her relative Nasreen and an acquaintance named Fayaz. Following a brief outing, the trio returned to Shabina’s residence. Later that day, Shabina’s husband, Jameel Ahmed, reportedly became enraged upon finding Nasreen and Fayaz at their home and escalated the matter by approaching the Jama Masjid in Bengaluru’s Tavarekere with a complaint, as per a report on India Today.

Viral Video Shows Vicious Beating

Footage of the attack, now viral on social media, shows a group of men assaulting Shabina with sticks, iron rods, and wooden clubs. At one point, members of the mob attempted to hurl stones at her, in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to inflict fatal harm. Bystanders can be seen either watching passively or filming the incident instead of intervening.

Police Action

After recovering from her injuries, Shabina filed a formal complaint on April 11 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), reported NDTV.

In her statement, Shabina said that after returning from her outing with Nasreen and her children, she took prescribed medication and went to rest. Fayaz visited the house again in the evening. Her husband’s outrage over their presence reportedly led to the events that culminated in the assault.

Davanagere police subsequently arrested six men identified as Mohammad Niyaz, Mohammad Gauspeer, Chand Basha, Inayat Ullah, Dastagir, and Rasool. Authorities have confirmed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.
