Breaking News: Violence Erupts in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal Over New Waqf Law, Protests Escalate
In West Bengal, violent protests have erupted in opposition to the new Waqf law. After Murshidabad, the violence has now spread to South 24 Parganas. Protesters set fire to streets, and the situation quickly escalated. The unrest began with road blockages, and when the police arrived, clashes ensued. To control the situation, the police resorted to lathi-charge, but the protesters retaliated by setting fire to a police bike and a van. The Indian Secular Front organized a rally in Kolkata against the new law, calling people from across West Bengal to join. However, the rally was not approved by the police, which led to further unrest. The protesters insisted on their democratic right to rally. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed the deployment of central forces, BSF, and West Bengal Police to maintain order. BSF ADG Ravi Gandhi is on his second day of visiting Malda and Murshidabad, where he will report back to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi. The Supreme Court has also taken up the case, with lawyer Shashank Shekhar Jah describing the violence as an infiltration of peace in the region.
