Marking the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr B R Ambedkar, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced the launch of the Babasaheb Ambedkar Educational Tour Programme for school students. Under the initiative, children from government schools would go on guided visits to significant sites associated with Ambedkar’s life, including the Mahaparinirvan Sthal in Alipur and the Babasaheb Ambedkar International Centre.

Speaking at a gathering at Shah Auditorium, the Chief Minister said the educational tour aims to inspire young minds with Ambedkar’s ideals of equality, justice and nation-building. She added, “His legacy is not just something to study — it’s a way of life.”

The Delhi government also launched a 15-day awareness campaign, during which schools across the capital would organise special assemblies and educational activities focusing on Ambedkar’s contributions. Gupta also announced the revival of previously discontinued initiatives related to skill-based education and startup funding to support underprivileged and marginalised communities.

The event also included the distribution of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, hearing aids and learning kits to specially-abled children under the Sugamya Sahayak Yojana. A number of students were felicitated for their artistic achievements.

The Chief Minister paid floral tributes at several locations across the city, including Prerna Sthal in Haiderpur, the Delhi Legislative Assembly and Mahaparinirvan Sthal in Alipur. She was accompanied by Cabinet Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh, Chief Secretary Dharmendra and other senior officials.

“Earlier governments used Babasaheb’s name for tokenism. But it is under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership that his vision is being implemented meaningfully,” she said, citing initiatives such as the Ambedkar Centres of Excellence, the BHIM app and the development of five ‘Panchteerth’ pilgrimage sites linked to his life.

Gupta said Ambedkar belongs to all Indians and should not be confined to any one political party or section of society. “It is because of the rights Babasaheb secured for women that I stand here today as Delhi’s Chief Minister,” she said. Gupta reaffirmed Delhi Government’s commitment to remain rooted in people’s problems and Ambedkar’s vision of social harmony and empowerment.

The day-long tribute concluded with cultural performances and a pledge from the Delhi Government to continue upholding Ambedkar’s ideals in both policy and practice.
