After Narayana Murthy’s Infosys, now this IT company sacks hundreds of employees due to…, not Ratan Tata’s TCS, Microsoft, name is…
Alphabet Inc.’s Google has laid off hundreds of employees in its platforms and devices division, according to a report by The Information, which cited a source familiar with the matter. This division handles operations like the Android platform, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser.
The job cuts come after Google’s January offer of voluntary buyouts to employees in the same unit. “Since combining the platforms and devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively. This included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January,” a Google spokesperson told The Information.
Big Tech has been experiencing layoffs for many months, as many companies are prioritizing investments in data centers and artificial intelligence and reducing spending in other business areas. Meta, the parent company of Facebook had cut 5% of its ‘lowest performers’ earlier this year and hired more employees in machine learning roles.
Other tech giants have also reduced their workforce in recent months. Microsoft cut 650 jobs in its Xbox division in September, while Amazon laid off employees across several units, including communications. Apple reduced its staff by eliminating around 100 positions in its digital services division in 2022.
Google has done layoffs earlier this year. In February, according to Bloomberg, Google’s cloud division had also experienced job cuts, though the impact was limited to a few teams.
In January 2023, Alphabet had announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 12,000 roles, of around 6% of its total employees, as part of a company-wide restructuring effort.
According to media reports Narayana Murthy’s Infosys had sacked some of the trainees from its Mysore campus some months ago.
