AAP leaders flay Pannun for remarks on Ambedkar, call for harmony
Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have strongly condemned the recent remarks allegedly made by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a known pro-Khalistan advocate, against Dr BR Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The leaders called the statements divisive and harmful to Punjab’s social harmony.
At a press conference held in Phagwara recently, AAP leaders Harnoor Singh Maan, Lalit Saklani, Jarnail Nangal and Santosh Kumar Gogi collectively denounced the comments and appealed to the public to reject such rhetoric.
Harnoor Singh Maan termed the remarks as “deeply objectionable”, emphasising that Dr Ambedkar is a respected national figure whose work through the Constitution secured rights for Dalits, women and marginalised communities across India.
“Dr Ambedkar’s vision was inclusive and progressive,” Maan stated. “Attempts to undermine his legacy are not only misguided but aimed at disrupting peace and unity in Punjab.” He further urged members of the Dalit community to remain united against such influences and focus on progress through education and social development.
Lalit Saklani also addressed the media, highlighting Sikhism’s emphasis on equality and the rejection of caste-based discrimination. “Punjab is the land of Gurus, saints and harmony. Hatred and violence have no place here,” Saklani said.
The leaders announced that AAP would commemorate Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14 across Punjab. Party workers would ensure the protection of Dr Ambedkar’s statues and legacy, they said.
The press conference concluded with an appeal to all communities to uphold peace and reject any attempts to create discord in society.
