Delhi woman was killed and did not commit suicide, shows autopsy report

The post-mortem report in a suspected suicide case in south Delhi has revealed that the death of a 28-year-old woman was, in fact, a case of murder. Her husband has since been arrested.

On March 6, the police received a call about a woman found hanging at her house in southwest Delhi’s Mahipalpur area following which officers from Vasant Kunj South police station rushed to the spot and found Kalpana, wife of Amit Sehrawat, unresponsive.

She was taken to ISIC Hospital in Vasant Kunj, where doctors declared her “brought dead”.

Kalpana had been married to Amit for six years and was the mother of a five-year-old.

Based on initial observations and statements from her family—who confirmed frequent arguments with her husband but made no allegations of dowry harassment—police treated the case as that of suicide.

Accordingly, proceedings under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were initiated.

However, the investigation took a turn when the post-mortem was conducted at Safdarjung Hospital on March 8. The autopsy report stated that Kalpana had died due to “asphyxia consequent upon antemortem ligature strangulation”, clearly suggesting foul play. Viscera samples were preserved for toxicology analysis to rule out any possible poisoning.

Following the revelation, a case under Section 80 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder, was registered, and a detailed investigation was launched.

During interrogation, Amit confessed to the crime. According to police sources, on the night of March 5, he, along with his family, attended a wedding in Masoodpur, Vasant Kunj. After they returned home, a heated argument broke out between the couple.

Following this, Amit strangled Kalpana to death. He then used a rope to hang her body, to make it appear a suicide.
