Omar-led Govt fails to deliver on election promises: Sharma

Srinagar, Apr 12: Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma, today accused the Omar-led Government of failing to deliver on its promises, stating both routine governance and the recent budget session reflect its “failure.”
Speaking to reporters here, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said that people had high expectations from the Government, as the National Conference (NC) had made tall claims during the election campaign and secured a majority by “misguiding” the public.
“Omar Abdullah promised 200 units of free electricity, 10 kilograms of ration, 5 lakh jobs, and free gas cylinders. They exploited people with these promises and secured a majority,” he said. Click here to watch video
“In Kashmir, they sold dreams of restoring Article 370 and releasing stone pelters, whom they described as political prisoners. They misled the people of Kashmir and formed the Government,” he added.
Sharma pointed out that in the last six months, none of the promises made by the NC have been reflected in either the budget or day-to-day governance.
“Only Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families were covered under the free electricity scheme. The scheme is valid for just two years, but they claimed it would last for five. How do they plan to sustain it?” he questioned.
Regarding the launch of a free bus service for women, Sharma remarked, “While the service has been introduced, bus fares have simultaneously increased, along with a hike in fuel prices.”
He added, “the routine governance and budget session reflect this Government’s failure and betrayal of the people.”
On the demand for Statehood, Sharma said, “It does not belong to the NC. They had promised free ration, employment, and power-not Statehood. That promise is part of our narrative. Why are they chasing it now?”
“Omar Abdullah should not mislead the people. Statehood will be restored at an appropriate time, but not through religious sloganeering inside the Assembly,” he said.
Addressing the uproar in the Assembly during the concluding days of the budget session, Sharma stated that it was the first time in the history of the J&K Legislative Assembly that the Government prevented the House from functioning.
“It was a drama staged by the NC over the Waqf Bill. They deliberately disrupted proceedings to avoid a meaningful discussion on the issues concerning the people,” he added.
The BJP leader emphasized that his party is committed to eradicating terrorism and separatism and declared that there would be “no compromise until complete peace is achieved.”
Criticizing the NC for claiming that 10,000 of its workers were killed in Kashmir, Sharma said, “these deaths occurred when Omar and Farooq Abdullah held the Home Department.”
He added, “the NC Government’s record is full of betrayals. Shops were closed, schools remained shut, and chaos reigned when they were in power. It was during NC rule that schools and hospitals were set ablaze by terrorists. Since the Government of India took charge of law and order, not a single NC worker has been killed. Their safety today is due to Amit Shah’s leadership.”
Accusing the NC of never making genuine efforts to restore normalcy in Kashmir, Sharma asserted, “now that the security responsibility lies with Amit Shah, downtown Srinagar is thriving, and business is booming. When the NC was in charge, everything was in disarray.”
He stated that the people of Kashmir have elected representatives to address their issues in the Assembly, adding, “raising slogans would be more appropriate in mosques. The Assembly is a place for policy and debate, not for inciting divisions. Such behavior only proves that the NC is trying to create communal rifts for political gain.”
Sharma maintained that the BJP Government stands by its commitments and that the people of J&K have nothing to worry about.
“Omar Abdullah doesn’t need to seek Statehood. It will be restored at the appropriate time,” he said. He reiterated that the Modi Government is committed to restoring both Statehood and complete normalcy while eliminating all remaining elements of terrorism and separatism.
