Punjab’s oldest Christ Church caught in legal battle
The Christ Church at Fountain Chowk, the oldest and first church of undivided Punjab, is in dire need of attention. The foundation stone of this historical monument was laid by Daniel Wilson DD, Bishop of Calcutta and Metropolitan of India, on October 25, 1836.
The church was later consecrated on October 31, 1840. A commemorative tablet was unveiled by George Barne, the fifth Bishop of Lahore, marking the centenary of the church.
However, amidst its historical richness, a court case is currently underway regarding this heritage property located in a prime area of the city. Allegedly, the “land mafia” is eyeing the land for unlawful possession. The church, a testimony to colonial architecture and religious heritage, now waits for much-needed restoration and protection from encroachment.
Currently, the upkeep of the Christ Church and the adjoining Christ Church cemetery on Prince Road is being managed by Rev Pankaj Malik and his wife, Sister Pamela. The church spans 2.5 acres, while the cemetery covers 3.5 acres. Sister Pamela, who has been associated with the site since 1969, shared that her father, Rev. Inayat Khan from Hoshiarpur, was the previous caretaker of the church.
Talking to The Tribune, Sister Pamela stated that the cemetery near Prince Hostel is an integral part of the church and that the first burial took place there in 1810. “But it is in shambles as lot many persons have started throwing garbage in it. We have written to the authorities but of no use,” said Rev. Malik.
Built by the British, the church is affiliated with the Church of England. A foundation stone at the church sheds light on its history, revealing that it was constructed in memory of Bt Captain JE Grounds, who died at Landour. During its early days, the church served as a place of worship for elite British army personnel and civil officers. Over the decades, it has hosted lavish weddings, baptisms and solemn funerals. The original stained-glass paintings of Jesus Christ, Mother Mary and St John, were imported from Italy in the 1830s.
