Wheat arrival gains pace in Ambala, Kurukshetra amid uncertain weather conditions
After remaining sluggish, the wheat arrivals have started gaining pace at the grain markets in Ambala and Kurukshetra, however, uncertain weather conditions have left the farmers worried.
As per the information, over 24,635 MT of wheat has arrived at grain markets in Ambala till Thursday, while over 31,914 MT has arrived at Kurukshetra grain markets till Friday.
Wheat farmers and Agriculture Department officials said the rain not only would be harmful for the crop, but would also affect the procurement season adversely.
Rajiv Kumar, a farmer from Naraingarh in Ambala, said: “The crop is at a maturing stage and will be ready for harvest in a few days. The produce is looking good so far. But with cloudy conditions, the uncertain weather has been a matter of concern. If there is a heavy rain or hailstorm, the crop will be damaged.”
Similarly, Rakesh Bains, a farmer from Shahabad, said “The harvesting has started gathering pace and rain at this point is harmful for the wheat crop. Besides, affecting the crop in the fields and delaying the harvest, the rain would also impact the harvested produce in grain markets."
Ambala, Deputy Director Agriculture (DDA), Dr Jasvinder Saini said: “About 5 per cent crop has been harvested and the harvesting has now started gaining pace. There is a bumper crop so far, but the rain at this point of time may badly affect the crop and also the harvesting. If the weather remains good, about 50 per cent crop will be harvested by the next week.”
Meanwhile, Thanesar MLA Ashok Arora visited the grain market in Kurukshetra and expressed displeasure with the produced being not lifted.
Arora interacted with farmers and commission agents and later spoke to officials of the market committee about the lifting of the produce.
He said: “It has been 11 days since the wheat procurement season started but the tenders for the lifting are still being finalised. The delay in lifting will cause inconvenience to farmers and commission agents as the arrivals will turn heavy in next few days and leave the grain markets with no space.”
Kurukshetra DFSC Surender Saini said: “The lifting has started in a majority of grain markets, and it will be ensured that the produce is lifted from the all markets in a smooth manner.”
Similarly, Ambala DFSC Apar Tiwari said: “The arrivals have started gaining pace. The tenders for the lifting have been finalised and awarded for all grain markets. The lifting is likely to begin from Saturday. It will be ensured that the lifting is done in a smooth manner.”
