Talk on women’s health at SCD college
SCD Government College organised an insightful talk on women’s health and hygiene aimed at raising awareness among students, especially young women, about essential health practices. The session was inaugurated by Professor Gitanjali Pabreja. Dr Gitanjali Kaur from PGIMER, Chandigarh, and senior consultant at PAL Hospital, delivered the keynote addresses.
Dr Gitanjali spoke on various aspects of women’s health, focusing on conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), lifestyle-related issues, and mental well-being. She emphasised the importance of menstruation as a natural part of womanhood, encouraging young women to embrace it as a sign of health rather than distress. She highlighted how a sedentary lifestyle and excessive sugar intake could trigger PCOS, leading to symptoms such as obesity, acne, unusual hair growth, scalp hair loss, darkening of underarms, and skin folds on the neck. These symptoms, if left unchecked, could lead to chronic conditions like Type-II diabetes, sleep disturbances, and fatigue.
Dr Kaur stressed the importance of maintaining gut health and staying physically active. She recommended walking at least 10,000 steps a day and engaging in moderate daily exercise. “The symphony of a normal female cycle is central to a woman’s well-being,” she noted. She also emphasised the role of B-complex vitamins—abundantly found in non-vegetarian food—and the need to return to healthier, more active daily habits.
The talk received enthusiastic participation, with students—particularly girls—engaging in a detailed question-and-answers session. Principal Gursharn Jit Singh Sandhu, lauded the guest speaker and spoke about the relevance of such talks in today’s times. The event was also attended by several local women councillors. They expressed that women empowerment began with awareness, and sessions like these paved the way for a healthier and stronger future for women.
