L-G announces ₹500-cr educational hub in Narela
Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who is also the Chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, has announced a budgetary provision of Rs 500 crore for an upcoming educational hub in Narela.
The announcement was made during the 17th convocation ceremony of the university, held on its Dwarka campus on Friday.
Delivering the presidential address, Saxena emphasised the significance of education that uplifted others, stating, “Education that does not bring happiness to someone’s life is of no real value.”
He exhorted students to remain sensitive to their surroundings and highlighted the transformative power of individual action, saying, “History stands witness to the fact that a single individual can bring about global change.”
Saxena assured the gathering that Delhi was now in “safe hands”.
At the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said enhancing Delhi’s education system remained a priority for her administration. She exhorted students to recognise their responsibility in building a developed Delhi, and India, through collective participation. Education Minister Ashish Sood described degrees as testaments to students’ struggles, stating that the real test began now.
He called on the graduates to embrace sustainability and artificial intelligence in nation-building, while stressing that the process of learning should never end.
Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra underscored the urgency of bridging skill gaps to meet future challenges.
The convocation address was delivered by Ashutosh Sharma, President, Indian National Science Academy, who highlighted the need for fostering innovation, supporting start-ups and promoting lifelong learning.
A total of 24,456 degrees were awarded at the convocation — 110 PhDs, 12 MPhil degrees, 2,624 master’s degrees, 20,739 bachelor’s degrees, 483 MBBS degrees, and 488 post-graduate degrees in medicine and Ayurveda.
As many as 74 students received gold medals for academic excellence.
Vice-Chancellor Mahesh Verma presented the university report and announced plans to establish an Indian knowledge centre.
He said the university had signed around 100 memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including 40 with international institutions.
