'Mumbai-1': 'Single Card System For All Public Transport To Be Launched In City Soon,' Says Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai: In a major move towards streamlining public transport in Mumbai, the much-anticipated 'Mumbai-1' single card system is set to be launched soon. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that this unified card will allow commuters to access all modes of public transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including the suburban railway, Metro, Monorail and city buses, with a single tap.
“This will revolutionise how Mumbai travels,” Fadnavis said at a joint press conference with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He further stated that integration with the railway ticketing system is already in progress and will be completed within a month.
The 'Mumbai-1' card is part of the state government's broader effort to modernise urban transport and offer seamless connectivity across various services. Once fully operational, the card is expected to simplify the commuting experience for lakhs of daily passengers and reduce the dependence on cash or multiple apps and tokens.
238 New AC Locals Sanctioned For Mumbai Local Rail Network
Alongside this development, Railway Minister Vaishnaw also announced a major upgrade for Mumbai’s local train network. A total of 238 new AC local trains have been sanctioned for the Mumbai suburban system, further enhancing commuter comfort and reducing overcrowding. These new AC trains will majorly boost the city's existing fleet and improve travel efficiency across the Western, Central and Harbour lines.
Projects Worth Over ₹1 Lakh Cr Announced
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that railway infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,73,804 crore are currently underway across Maharashtra, signaling an unprecedented scale of development in the state. In addition to the ongoing works, new railway projects worth Rs 23,778 crore have been sanctioned this year alone. Highlighting Mumbai’s importance, Vaishnaw revealed that Rs 17,000 crore-worth projects are specifically being implemented in the city, which he said will transform the railway network in the financial capital of India.
Among the key announcements was the approval of the Gondia-Ballarshah railway line in eastern Maharashtra. Chief Minister Eknath Fadnavis, speaking at the same event, noted that this project would significantly enhance connectivity between Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The Union government will bear Rs 4,019 crore of the total cost, underlining its commitment to regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
Another notable project revealed by CM Fadnavis is the upcoming ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Line’, aimed at promoting tourism. The new circuit train will take passengers on a heritage journey through areas marked by forts and landmarks from the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, offering a cultural and historical experience tied to Maharashtra’s rich legacy.
