‘No recognition, no support’: Mr Asia feels let down by Punjab government

A city-based athlete from Mundian, Ashu Sharma, has made history by clinching a gold medal at the Asia Bodybuilding Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand, recently. By defeating over 400 bodybuilders from across Asia, including top athletes from India, Russia and China, Ashu earned the prestigious title of Mr Asia.

But despite his monumental success, Ashu feels let down by the lack of recognition from the state and political leaders. “If I belonged to another state, I might have received a government job and proper recognition for my success,” said Ashu while expressing his frustration.

In addition to his international achievement, Ashu has a long list of victories, including being crowned Mr Punjab five times and winning several district-level championships. He has also triumphed in prestigious events like Mr Ludhiana (2020), Mr Amritsar (2019) and Mr Sangrur (2022).

Despite his repeated triumphs in the world of bodybuilding, Ashu has received no official appreciation or support. “I won a gold in the international bodybuilding championship in Bangkok, where I defeated more than 400 participants from various countries. It was a proud moment for me to represent India and wrap myself with the Tricolour. Yet, I feel completely ignored by the state government and local politicians,” said Ashu.

This lack of recognition has left Ashu disheartened. “The government welcomes athletes who win medals in other sports, but in my case, I was completely ignored. No politician or government official reached out to honour me. Even the minister who lives near my house didn’t bother to wish me,” he added.

Ashu, who runs his own fitness gym on Chandigarh Road, also highlighted the financial strain of pursuing his passion. “I spent over Rs 2 lakh to participate in the Bangkok championship and now I need around Rs 5 lakh to compete in the Mr World Bodybuilding Championship in England this October. I am preparing for the competition,” he said.

Ashu’s frustration is palpable. “In other states, athletes are given government jobs, financial support and proper recognition. But in Punjab, despite winning multiple gold medals and making my state proud, there is no appreciation,” he said.
