Apni Party files writ petition in top court against Waqf Act
Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party submitted a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Party chief Altaf Bukhari said, “Hopefully, this matter will be taken up, along with other petitions concerning the same issue, for an early hearing”.
“I strongly believe that this legal battle is about protecting the constitutional rights of minorities, as the amended Waqf Act undoubtedly undermines the rights of Muslim minorities—not only in J&K but across the country,” said Bukhari.
“Through the petition, we have challenged the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, and presented compelling arguments in support of our stance,” he stated.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, which was passed by Parliament last week, has come into force from April 8, 2025. While the BJP-led NDA had rallied in support of the bill, the Opposition INDIA bloc united in opposing it.
