Anti-India Mohammad Yunus seeks help from China, Bangladesh army chief takes a big step…, India’s friend…
Bangladesh Army Chief General Wakar uz-Zaman is on a four-day visit to Russia. General Zaman ‘s visit to Russia comes within days of the meeting between Muhammad Yunus and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok last week. Just before this, Bangladesh’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus visited China, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders. Now General Zaman’s visit to Russia is being seen as a step to diversify Dhaka’s global reach.
Visit to weapons facilities
General Zaman, who arrived in Russia, visited weapons manufacturing facilities, besides holding discussions with both civilian and military leadership in Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry said that a meeting was held between Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Alexander Fomin and General Zaman, in which both discussed the possibilities of military cooperation.
China’s tension will increase
The statement said they “discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the defence sector and expressed mutual determination to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the armies and peoples of Russia and Bangladesh.” Gen Zaman’s visit could be part of the army chief’s efforts to diversify the Bangladesh army by reducing the Chinese-origin defence equipment used by it. This would raise tensions for China .
Relief for India
While Mohammad Yunus is trying to increase China’s strategic presence in Bangladesh, the army chief’s efforts will provide India relief from the growing Russia-Bangladesh ties. Unlike India and Myanmar, Bangladesh has limited defence partnership with Moscow. However, the Bangladesh army has Russian defence equipment, including Yak trainer aircraft and some MiG fighter jets.
