Only state in India, which was neither captured by Mughals nor defeated by British, it is…

India’s freedom movement remains one of the most powerful non-violent resistance movements in history. The British ruled India for almost 200 years. They first came to trade through the East India Company, but slowly took control of the land. After a big revolt in 1857, the British government took full control and started ruling India. Many Indian leaders, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose, led peaceful protests to fight for freedom. After a long struggle, India finally became free on August 15, 1947.

Initially, India was governed by the Mughal Empire, which was founded by Babur in 1526. After the uprising of 1857, the British took over and brought the Mughal reign to an end, establishing their own rule over the country. The last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was captured by the British and reportedly exiled to Burma (now Myanmar).

Later, the British went on to rule India for nearly 200 years. However, amid all this, there was one region in the country where neither the Mughals could establish their rule nor did the British dare to enter. Any guesses? Well, that place was none other than Goa.

Goa was the only region in India that neither the Mughals nor the British could conquer. However, it wasn’t independent, as it remained under Portuguese rule. According to the reports, the Portuguese ruled over Goa for nearly 450 years. Goa gained its freedom 14 years after the rest of India became independent.

India gained independence from the British on August 15, 1947. However, Goa got its freedom from Portuguese rule 14 years later, on December 19, 1961, after which it officially became a part of India. In March 1510, the Portuguese, led by Afonso de Albuquerque, invaded Goa and took control of it without facing much resistance.
