From dairy to goat farming — an inspiring success story

Goat farming holds significant potential for high returns. Driven by strong demand for meat, milk and byproducts like manure, it is a viable business opportunity.

Baldev Singh Sandhu, a farmer from Manuke Sandhu village, was recently honoured with the Chief Minister’s Award for excellence in goat farming during the Pashu Palan Mela organised by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

After completing his education, Sandhu initially started a dairy farm but aspired to expand his business. “I did a lot of research before venturing into goat farming. It took me six months during which I visited various goat farms in nearby districts and the neighbouring state of Haryana. I also received training from GADVASU before finally deciding to start goat rearing,” he said.

Sandhu began goat farming in 2022 with 65 beetle goats, and today, his farm has as many as 270 goats. He has transformed his farm into a breeding facility and has also established the ‘Beetle Breeders Club.

Speaking about goat farming as a profession, he said, “It is quite a lucrative business as the cost of inputs is significantly less than the output or returns.”
