Power, water woes hit Mohali

Power outages crippled several areas of Mohali on Wednesday morning, while water supply remained disrupted due to grid maintenance and pipeline repair work by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and the Water Supply and Sanitation Department.

Residents of Phase 3A, Phase 3B1, Phase 3B2, Sector 53, Phase 5 and some parts of Phase 4 faced a planned seven-hour power cut from 10 am to 5 pm, which PSPCL officials said was part of scheduled repair and maintenance work.

However, unplanned outages further compounded the crisis. Industrial Area Phase 1 and Phase 3 experienced unscheduled two-hour blackouts from 6 am to 8 am. New Sunny Enclave, Desumajra, Sector 123, and Sector 125 faced power outages from 9 am to 11 am. Villages including Balongi, Daun, Thaska, Manana, Tarauli and Ramgarh reported power cuts lasting nearly an hour during the morning.

Simultaneously, water supply was impacted as the Kajauli Water Works Phase 1 and Phase 4 were shut from 9 am to 5 pm. This resulted in afternoon supply disruptions across Phase 1 to Phase 7, Sector 70, Sector 71, Mataur, Majra, Phase 9, Phase 10, Phase 11 and Industrial Areas Phase 1 to 5. Water Supply and Sanitation Department officials stated that pipeline repairs were also undertaken in Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 4. Supply will remain affected on Thursday as well, they added.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi lashed out at GMADA officials for the delay. “The operationalisation of this canal water booster would solve the drinking water issues in the area. However, for unknown reasons, its commissioning is being deliberately delayed,” he further added.
