Broken roads, filthy ponds plague Raikot villages

The poor condition of roads and ponds in various villages across Raikot is causing significant difficulties to residents. The ponds in villages such as Barundi, Buraj Hari Singh and others are in a state of neglect. The ponds are filled with dirt and the situation worsens during the rainy season when these overflow.

Kanwardeep Singh of Barundi village said that while some roads were recently constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), their quality is so poor that they are likely to deteriorate after just one spell of rain. “What is the use of constructing roads if they will not last? The Raikot-Jagraon road is also in very bad condition. It is still incomplete and dottted with potholes. It not only gives bumpy ride to commuters but also frequently leads to accidents,” he said.

Another resident, Gursewak Singh, added that the pond in their village was very dirty and should be cleaned regularly to maintain water quality, prevent disease and ensure its continued use for various purposes. “The pond has been in a bad shape for years, with no repair or cleaning work undertaken. The residents living nearby not only have to bear with the foul smell but also face the risk of falling ill. The situation worsens during the monsoon when the pond overflows, creating a mess and emitting a strong odour,” he said.

Jujhar Singh of Heran village emphasised the importance of ponds in village life, saying, “Village ponds play a crucial role in water conservation by acting as rainwater harvesting system, facilitating groundwater recharge, supporting agricultural activities and serving as a water source for domestic and livestock use. Ponds are considered symbols of prosperity in village life and they must be maintained properly.”
