Nurpur police bust inter-state drug racket, arrest 3 accused
In a major step to intensify the anti-drug campaign, the Nurpur district police successfully dismantled an inter-state drug racket yesterday by arresting three individuals involved in drug trafficking in the border district. The breakthrough occurred during a checkpoint at Kandwal on the Pathankot-Mandi national highway under the Nurpur police station, where police intercepted a car and seized 4.30 kg of charas from the vehicle.
The accused were identified as Amit Kaushal, from Aman Avenue, Amritsar and Gurpreet Singh, from Majitha Road, Amritsar. The police said a case under Sections 20, 25 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused.
Following interrogation, police discovered the duo were part of an inter-state drug smuggling operation, supplying narcotics to local dealers. The police were able to identify other members of the drug ring and arrested one more suspect, Beas Dev, from village Chaeel (Jaangi) in Chamba district, late yesterday evening.
In a separate investigation, the police have solved a theft case reported on April 5 at the Rehan police station. The theft had occurred in the house of a BSF jawan in Narnooh village, where jewellery and cash were stolen. Mamta Devi, the BSF jawan’s wife, had filed the FIR.
After gathering circumstantial evidence and identifying the suspects, the police arrested Yusaf Sippu from Old Gangath in Indora and Sahil from Barot in Fatehpur sub-division. They seized Rs 20,000 and a motorcycle used in the crime. Additionally, Kiran, the mother of Yusaf Sippu, was arrested for assisting in selling the stolen jewellery.
