Raigad Tragedy: Depressed Grandmother Jumps To Death With Ailing 1-Year-Old Grandson From Apartment Terrace

Navi Mumbai: A 51-year-old woman died along with her one-year-old grandson after jumping off the terrace of their apartment in Om Chambers society, Roha Taluka, Raigad, on Wednesday morning. The woman, identified as Urmila Shiddharaj Kore, was reportedly upset over the infant’s deteriorating health condition and ended her life in a tragic act of desperation.

Her grandson, Vedant Vivek Bhogade, had been diagnosed with brain cancer and was due to travel to Mumbai for treatment on the same day along with his parents. On Wednesday morning, when Kore’s daughter who is the mother of the child, had gone to the washroom, she took the child to the terrace and jumped. She died on the spot due to severe head injuries, while the child succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 7.30 am. Kore’s husband, Siddharaj Kashinath Kore (53), informed the police about the incident after which the police registered an accidental death report.

Roha Police has filed an accidental death report under Section 114 (Hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and initiated an investigation. According to police the grandmother had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past four years but had not been consistent with her medication. “Her mental health had significantly worsened after learning about her grandson’s critical illness. This was her second suicide attempt,” said Assistant Police Inspector Maruti Patil from Roha police station.
