The world’s largest rail coach manufacturing factory is in Tamil Nadu. This Integral Coach Factory is located in Parambur, Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.
As many as 170 types of coaches including Vande Bharat Train, Metro coaches, EMU, DMU, MEMU and various coaches of other trains are manufactured at the Parambur Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
Chennai Integral Coach Factory is the world’s largest rail coach manufacturing factory. Since the beginning of 2020, the company manufactures more than 4000 coaches every year. By June 2024, this Integral Coach Factory had manufactured 75000 railway coaches, including Vande Bharat coaches.
There are two main divisions in Integral Coach Factory. First is Shell Division and second is Furnishing Division. Shell Division has 14 different units which together manufacture the structure of the train coach.
After the coach is built, it is placed on the wheel set. There are units in the furnishing division. These units do the inside furnishing of the coach, outside painting, lighting work in the coach and other works on the coach.
The Chennai Integral Coach Factory was inaugurated in 1955 by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Integral Coach Factory is one of the earliest production units. The Furnishing Division was inaugurated on 2 October 1962. The construction of Chennai Integral Coach Factory at that time cost Rs 7 crore 47 lakh.
Railway coaches from Chennai Integral Coach Factory are also exported abroad. The first was exported to Thailand in 1967. Exports have been made to more than 13 African-Asian countries.
