The Canadian government led by Mark Carney has increased the federal minimum wage by 2.4 per cent for students and temporary workers effective from April 1. The means that the wage will now be raised to CAD 17.75 per hour from the earlier CAD 17.30.
Officials said the latest wage hike is an annual process as part of the revision of country's Consumer Price Index that is adjusted every April 1 to keep pace with inflation rates.
Canada's Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour Steve MacKinnon stated that the move will help reduce income inequality and help build a fair economy.

It is not just Canadians who will benefit from the wage hike. Immigrants, including Indian students and workers, will see a hike in their salaries as employers have been directed to revise their payroll rates. With living costs increasing every year, the wage hike will be a boon for immigrant students.
British Columbia will see a hike from $17.40 to $17.85 effective from June 1, 2025 while Manitoba wages will rise from $15.80 to $16 on October 1, 2025. Nova Scotia will hike salaries from $15.70 to $16.50 on October 1, 2025 and Quebec will raise wages from $15.75 to $16.10 on May 1, 2025 and Yukon increased wages to $17.94 on April 1, 2025.
