Dilip Kumar is regarded one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. For a very long time, he was considered the most eligible bachelors in Bollywood, until he got married at the age of 44 to the fellow Bollywood actress Saira Banu. Despite 22-year-old gap, the couple got married, but went through a serious heartbreak, when the actor got secretly married to another woman, named Asma Rehman. Dilip Kumar called it the biggest mistake of his life, and could never forgive himself for the pain he caused to Saira Banu.

In his memoir The Substance And The Shadow: An Autobiography, Dilip revealed about this turbulent period of his life, when he first met Asma Rehman in Hyderabad, at a cricket match. Initially, he met her as a fan, but later he got to know that there was a hidden motive behind the meetup. Dilip Kumar was introduced to Asma Rehman through his sisters. He then got to know that she was already married and had three children. Dilip then noticed that Asma and her husband used to follow him everywhere he went, “I was completely unaware of a connivance that was being mischievously perpetuated and a situation being cleverly created by vested interests to draw a commitment from me.” The late actor revealed.

In 1982, Dilip Kumar’s shocking news of getting married to Asma Rehman came out, leaving his first wife Saira Banu devastated, “I can never forget or forgive myself for the hurt I caused to Saira and the shattering of the unshakeable faith she had in me,” He wrote.

Dilip ultimately confessed that the marriage was a ‘grave mistake’ and asked Saira for sometime until he legally divorce Asma Rehman. He wrote, “Saira stood by me when I admitted the grave mistake and asked her to give me some time to undo the wrong through proper legal processes and restore the sanctity of our marriage of sixteen years. I requested Saira to give me some time to sort it all out.”

Later, he signed a “letter of commitment” to Saira Banu and made a promise to her parents that he would never consider a second marriage. Dilip felt that he was tricked and became a victim of false marriage. However, as destiny would have it, the whole situation made Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu’s bond stronger. The star couple remined together until he passed away in 2021.
