‘Establish a screen-free zone for children’
Dr Tarsem Singh urges parents to encourage healthy eating habits.
As a paediatrician and neonatologist, I have seen devastating consequences of neglecting key aspects of a child’s well-being. Vaccination, nutrition and screen time are three critical areas that require attention and care. Ignoring these red flags can have long-term effects on a child’s health, making it essential for parents to stay informed and take proactive steps.
Vaccination is a crucial defence against deadly diseases. However, some parents delay or skip vaccinations due to misinformation or forgetfulness, putting their children at risk. The consequences can be severe, leaving children vulnerable to infections like measles, diphtheria and whooping cough. To ensure your child receives the necessary protection, follow the government-recommended immunisation schedule, keep a vaccination record and set reminders for booster doses.
A balanced diet is vital for a child’s growth and development. Unfortunately, the prevalence of fast food and processed snacks has led to unhealthy eating habits. A poor diet can result in deficiencies, digestive issues and frequent illnesses. To promote healthy eating habits, encourage home-cooked meals rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals; introduce fruits, vegetables and whole grains early; limit sugary drinks and processed snacks, and consult a paediatrician if your child is a picky eater.
While technology is an essential part of the modern life, uncontrolled screen time can be detrimental to a child’s health. Excessive screen time can lead to disrupted sleep patterns, a lack of physical activity and behavioural and emotional issues. To mitigate these risks, limit screen time to 1 hour per day for children under five years and 2 hours for older kids, encourage physical activity, reading and creative hobbies. Establish a screen-free zone at least 1 hour before bedtime.
