One-way traffic implemented in Dharamsala’s Kotwali Bazaar

To ease congestion in the bustling Kotwali Bazaar area, the District Magistrate of Kangra, Hemraj Bairwa, has ordered the implementation of a one-way traffic system. The new traffic arrangement, aimed at streamlining vehicle movement through the narrow lanes of the market, will remain in effect daily from 10.30 am to 8 pm.

According to the new directive, vehicles will now enter Kotwali Bazaar through the main Dharamsala-Mcleodganj road and exit via Old Chadi Road and Gurdwara Road. Vehicles approaching from Kali Mata Mandir, the Municipal Corporation parking on Kharadanda Road, and Inclover Hotel will no longer be allowed direct access to the market and will have to take a detour through the Dharamsala bypass road.

Similarly, vehicles coming from Mcleodganj and Bhagsunag must also use the bypass. Those arriving from Dal Lake, Naddi, and Cantonment Board areas will be required to follow the same route. Meanwhile, vehicles from Khanyara, Kandi, and Dadnu will be allowed to proceed towards Ambedkar Chowk via Major Abhijit Thapa Marg and continue towards White Gate through Sham Nagar and Ramnagar.

District Magistrate Bairwa clarified that the restrictions would be relaxed on Mondays and on other days when the market is closed. Exemptions have been made for emergency services and vehicles related to law and order.

To ensure strict enforcement of the new traffic system, the administration has deployed police personnel at three key no-entry points. The Public Works Department has also been directed to install signboards to inform commuters about the new rules. Bairwa added that the SDM of Dharamsala will convene a meeting with relevant stakeholders to facilitate smooth implementation of the new traffic plan.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and enhance the shopping experience in one of Dharamsala’s busiest commercial areas.
