Ahmedabad: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram collapsed due to extreme heat during his visit to Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on the sidelines of the Congress Party's national convention on Tuesday, April 8. As per reports, the veteran politician was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The incident took place when Congress leaders visited the Sabarmati Ashram, a site deeply associated with Mahatma Gandhi, ahead of their national convention. The group, which included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, gathered at the ashram to pay homage and participate in a bhajan session.

Chidambaram, who was part of this delegation, reportedly began feeling unwell due to the intense heat. Temperatures in Ahmedabad have been soaring, and the heatwave conditions appear to have taken a toll on the 78-year-old leader. Eyewitnesses reported that he looked visibly uncomfortable before fainting on the site. He was quickly escorted to a hospital where he is currently receiving care.

Congress National Convention At Gujarat

The Congress party is currently holding its national convention in Gujarat, a strategically significant state for the party. The event has brought together top Congress brass, with discussions expected to revolve around party strategy, upcoming elections, and internal restructuring.

Chidambaram’s health episode briefly disrupted the schedule, but other leaders continued with the planned events at the ashram. Party officials later confirmed that he was stable and under observation.
