MLAs Pushed Out Of J&K Assembly After Ruckus As Speaker Disallows Waqf Bill Debate: WATCH

The J&K Assembly saw major disruption again on Tuesday. The assembly proceedings were disrupted on Monday as well over the passage of the Waqf Bill in Parliament and its subsequent signing by the President. The Speaker disallowed debate on the Waqf Bill on Monday, sparking protests.

The ruckus ensued on Tuesday after Mehbooba Mufti's PDP submitted a fresh resolution in the House urging the central government to repeal the Waqf Act. "The Waqf issue transcends matters of faith. It is a direct assault on the rights, beliefs, and dignity of 24 crore Muslims in India. As the only Muslim-majority region, Jammu & Kashmir must rise to the occasion and defend the rights of its people," Mufti posted on X, tagging CM Omar Abdullah.

"PDP has submitted a fresh resolution addressing this crucial issue. The government must take it seriously to ensure that the voice of the people is heard. I urge the Chief Minister, the Legislative Assembly and the J&K government to show political resolve and stand firm against any encroachment on the rights of its people," she added.

Mehbooba's daughter and PDP leader Iltija Mufti said: "The NC government drunk on power isn’t just endorsing BJP's Waqf Bill but is also disallowing PDP's resolution against this sinister bill in the J&K assembly. In its greed for power, the NC is legitimising oppression against Muslims not just in J&K but now in India too."

BJP Slams Assembly Disruption

BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, too, blamed Omar Abdullah's National Conference, claiming that the party's MLAs were going against the Speaker they elected.

"This is unfortunate, democracy is being murdered here. They are not allowing House proceedings to continue. They didn't let Question House happen yesterday...MLAs of the National Conference came to the Well of the House against their own Speaker. They started a ruckus. People of PDP made them realise that you are fighting for Waqf and tours to Tulip Garden are being made. So, in their tussle, the important time of the House is being wasted..."

What NC Said

JKNC MLA Tanvir Sadiq said that the way the Waqf Bill has been passed in Parliament goes against the Muslim community.

"For the first time, there will be a non-Muslim member and an arbitrator will be the DC — this is a highly flawed bill. We may not be able to challenge the bill directly, but we can certainly voice our concerns. We believe the Assembly is the place where we should be allowed to speak. Today, once again, 25 Assembly members are bringing an adjournment motion. We hope the Speaker takes the sense of the House and allows us to have a debate in the Assembly," Sadiq said.

Several MLAs were eventually shoved out of the assembly by Marshalls and the proceedings were temporarily suspended.
