107 Karnal schools found operating without recognition, face action

The Education Department has flagged 107 private schools in Karnal district for allegedly operating without recognition from any authorised board such as the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) or CBSE. Notices have been issued to these institutions, seeking clarification on their affiliation status.

The schools were initially given a deadline until Monday to respond, but the department has now extended it by two more days to allow time for submission of replies.

“These institutions are not only violating educational norms but also jeopardising the future of children by operating without proper affiliation and facilities,” said a senior department official. Many of these schools reportedly lure parents with low-cost education and fee concessions, especially in rural and densely populated urban areas, while bypassing regulatory requirements.

According to sources, of the 107 schools identified, 62 are in rural regions and 21 are operating within urban residential colonies. The highest number —51 — is in Karnal block, followed by 25 in Gharaunda, 19 in Nissing, five in Indri, four in Nilokheri, and three in Assandh.

“These schools often operate from narrow lanes and compact village areas to avoid inspections,” the official added.

Rohtash Verma, District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), said, “As per the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), 107 schools have been identified as operating without recognition. Six of them have responded, claiming they possess valid affiliation. Their claims will be verified.”

Verma emphasised that schools failing to upload their data on UDISE will be treated as unrecognised. “It is the responsibility of school managements to ensure their data is updated on UDISE,” he said, warning of possible closure or penalties for non-compliance.

District Education Officer (DEO) Sudesh Thukral also urged school operators to respond promptly. “Our objective is to ensure that all private educational institutions in the district operate in accordance with prescribed norms and regulations,” she said.

Thukral further appealed to parents to verify the recognition status of schools before enrolling their children, stressing the need for regulatory compliance to safeguard the quality of education.
