For the unversed, Jaya Prada’s real name is Lalitha Rani. She was born in a Telugu family in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. Her father was a film producer. She wanted to become a doctor. However, a director who saw her dance performance at the school anniversary offered her a three-minute dance role in the Telugu film ‘Bhoomi Kosam’ (1974). Thus, she was introduced to the silver screen and ruled the industry. Her remuneration for her first film was only Rs.10. But, that small role changed Jaya Prada’s destiny. After making her name in the industry many famous directors and producers wanted to cast her in the film. Jaya soon became a top heroine in Telugu by 1976.

Jaya Prada made her Bollywood debut with ‘Sargam’, a remake of the Telugu hit ‘Siri Siri Muvva’. The film was not only a blockbuster but also earned the beautiful actress a Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. However, her inability to speak Hindi properly at that time became a major disadvantage for her. She had a hard time cashing in on the success that came her way.
