Police seize huge hauls of poppy husk, opium in Abohar

In a series of coordinated operations, police in Abohar and adjoining Sriganganagar district thwarted several smuggling attempts, seizing large quantities of poppy husk and opium.

Police said 32.5 kg of poppy husk was recovered from a car traveling along the Amritsar-Jamnagar Express Highway. The vehicle was escorted by another car driven by the accomplices of the accused.

Four persons—Kala Singh Harman, Parwinder Singh Vikram, Dharminder Singh Babbu and Sandeep Singh Buddha—were arrested in connection with the bust. A case was registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

In a separate incident, Buta Singh of Muktsar’s Bariwala was arrested after 3.287 kg of poppy husk was found in his possession.

In Abohar, the City-2 police recovered 400 kg of poppy husk from a car that was parked near a marriage hall. The consignment is believed to have been smuggled from Rajasthan.

The police also seized 1 kg of opium from a car during a routine check. Sukhpal Singh and Zorawar Singh were arrested under the NDPS Act in connection with the seizure.

In Sriganganagar, three persons—Sukhwinder Singh Sunny of Jalalabad and Mangaljit Singh of Guruharsahai—were arrested and brought on production warrants from Ferozepur Central Jail for investigation related to a seizure of 6 kg of heroin smuggled from Pakistan in June last year.
