What is 'Karma', the latest hot Korean Netflix series everyone is talking about?

Netflix has released a new Korean series titled Karma, that began streaming on Friday. It has caught the attention of some fans who religiously follow Korean content in the streaming space. Touted as a thriller, Karma revolves around a man who is deep in debt making a choice that triggers a dangerous Butterfly Effect-style chain of events.

The appeal of the show for many seems to be the relatability factor — the idea of having ordinary characters making some wrong choices and dealing with the repercussions — and the multiple twists and turns. In the show, lead actor Lee Hee-jun plays a character simply referred to as the Debtor who is experiencing a grave financial crisis after the investments he undertook failed to bear fruit.

Adding to his woes is a loan shark after his hide for the money he borrowed, which he is now expected to pay immediately. This leads to the Debtor devising a get-rich-quick plan which neither bodes well for him nor the five people who get unwittingly trapped in the damning series of events that follow.

Based on the webtoon of the same name by Choi See-hun, the six-episode limited series is directed by Lee Il-hyung, known for the Korean hit A Violent Prosecutor, and stars Lee Hee-jun (A Killer Paradox), Kim Sung-kyun (Officer Black Belt), Park Hae-soo (Squid Game), Shin Min-a (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), Lee Kwang-soo (Korea No.1), and Gong Seung-yeon (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls).

It's not yet clear whether there will be a second season.
