Ukrainians mistakenly told to deport the US in accidental email by DHS
WASHINGTON, Apr 5: In a communication error, the Trump administration accidently told Ukrainian refugees living in the US to leave the country as their legal status had been revoked. The email, mistakenly sent by the Department of Homeland Security, asked them to self-parole.
According to CBS News, the notice sent on April 3 read “DHS is now exercising its discretion to terminate your parole,” referring to the temporary parole status granted to Ukrainian refugees under the Joe Biden administration. The notice further read “Unless it expires sooner, your parole will terminate seven days from the date of this notice.”
It is unclear how many Ukrainians received the message, though it ended up causing hysteria and panic among those who got the notification, baffling them why their temporary legal status had been suddenly revoked.
As of now, 240,000 Ukrainian refugees reside in the United States, having fled their country during its war with Russia, with their temporary parole status giving them work permits and deportation protection.
If recipients failed to leave the US, the message read, they would “be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States,” unless they have received another immigration status.
With the Trump administration clarifying that the parole status was not revoked, the DHS told CBS News, “A message was sent in error to some Ukrainians under the U4U program,” adding that “The U4U parole program has not been terminated.”
The agency also took the step of retracting the email Friday, writing to recipients in a second email: “(Y)ou may have received an email notification titled ‘Notice of Termination of Parole.’ The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sent this email to you in error. No action will be taken with respect to your parole.”
Though not yet formally terminating the program, the Trump administration has nonetheless suspended admissions under the policy, as well as status renewals for those already in the US. (UNI)
