Mumbai News: 22-Year-Old Woman Dies By Suicide; Amboli Police Book 24-Yr-Old Boyfriend For Abetment
Mumbai: The Amboli police have registered an FIR against Samay Dalavi, 24, for the alleged abetment of suicide. Sharmin Rodricks, 22, reportedly died by suicide on March 23. She is believed to have hanged herself with a dupatta from a ceiling fan at her residence. Her mother filed a complaint against Samay.
About The Case
According to the complaint, Sharmin and Samay were in a relationship, but he refused to marry her. Her mother alleged that Sharmin had undergone two abortions due to the relationship. She also claimed that Samay was addicted to alcohol, and that ongoing issues between the two led her daughter to take the drastic step. The police registered the case on April 2.
As per the FIR, the deceased, Sharmin, lived in Andheri West with her mother and sister. After completing her 12th standard, she left college and began working at a law firm. However, she quit her job three months before her death. In the meantime, she had been assisting her mother, who runs a tiffin service.
Sharmin and Samay, who lived in the same area, became friends and eventually entered into a romantic relationship about four years ago. During their relationship, Sharmin often supported Samay financially.
The complaint states that Samay, who is an alcoholic, frequently argued with Sharmin. Having lost his parents, he lived with his paternal aunt, Neha Sawant. Sharmin had asked him to speak with his aunt about their marriage, but he did not do so. About a year ago, Sharmin's mother visited his aunt’s house to discuss the proposal, but the aunt allegedly rejected it because Sharmin belonged to a different religion. Samay continued to avoid marriage, claiming he could only proceed with his aunt’s approval.
Meanwhile, he allegedly continued to meet Sharmin, demanded money from her, physically assaulted her, and forced her to undergo abortions. He also reportedly pressured her to send him obscene photos and videos.
On March 23, Sharmin was alone at home. When her mother and sister returned from church around 5:45 pm, they found the door locked. After receiving no response from inside, they sought help from neighbours to break open the door and discovered Sharmin hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. She was rushed to Cooper Hospital in Juhu, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A video message addressed to Samay was later found on her mobile phone.
Following this, her mother lodged a complaint, and the Amboli police registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
