Travelling by plane is old now, as Air Taxi is here! Air travel in India is taking a new leap with the introduction of Air Taxi, which is soon going to start in many big cities of the country. Sarla Aviation’s startup, Shunya Air Taxi, will soon launch its Air Taxi services in major cities such as Mumbai and Delhi, but first, it will be launched in Bengaluru.

The Future Of Air Mobility Is Growing Rapidly

As per CEO of Sarla Aviation Company Adrian Schmidt, air taxi services will be expanded across the country in the next five years. At present, the company plans to deploy 30 flying taxis by 2028. To accelerate, the company is expanding its team, which has now grown from 20 members in January to 47 and aims to take it to 120 by the end of the year.

Who Is Investing?

Notably, the startup has received USD 10 million in funding led by Accel to take their plan forward. This investment includes Flipkart’s Binny Bansal, Zerodha’s Nikhil Kamath and Swiggy’s Sriharsha Majety. The company is not focusing on providing services, but on manufacturing electric air taxis.

This electric air taxi, utilizing eVTOL technology, takes off and lands vertically, eliminating the need for runways. It will be offered in 4- and 6-passenger configurations, and a cargo variant will facilitate freight transport. The developers are prioritizing affordability for the average passenger.

Government Engaged In Developing Infrastructure

India is actively developing infrastructure to support air taxi services by 2026.  The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has established airworthiness standards for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Additionally, IndiGo has placed an order for 200 air taxis from Archer Aviation, with anticipated deployment by 2026.
