Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in the world. And the believers of this religion know that there are five pillars of Islam, and Salah (Namaz) is one of them. Recently, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs released a circular instructing imams and muezzins to shorten the iqamah for noon and afternoon prayers, and to refrain from unnecessarily prolonging the prayers, as reported by ArabTimes Kuwait. This is to encourage electricity and water conservation in mosques.

‘Circular No. 8 of 2024 stated that, in light of the message received from the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy regarding scheduled power outages at all mosques across the six governorates,’ reported ArabTimes Kuwait. These outages will begin 30 minutes after the noon call to prayer and end 15 minutes before the afternoon prayer.
According to the Kuwait Mosques app, the outages will also take place from 30 minutes after the afternoon prayer until 5 PM. As per the TV9Hindi report, the government has also issued guidelines to conserve water during wudu (the ritual purification performed before prayers). Mosque authorities have been instructed to take necessary steps to prevent unnecessary water wastage. This move is expected to not only conserve valuable resources but also improve the overall maintenance of mosques.
The government of Kuwait has urged all worshippers to adhere to the newly issued guidelines and support efforts to address the ongoing energy crisis. Although the move has faced some criticism from certain sections, officials argue that the decision is a timely necessity.
