PM Modi To Inaugurate India’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge In Tamil Nadu Tomorrow: Know Schedule & Details
PM Modi Tamil Nadu Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Tamil Nadu on April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami, to inaugurate a slew of key infrastructure projects, including the much-anticipated New Pamban Rail Bridge — India’s first vertical lift sea bridge.
Pamban Bridge Inauguration
At around 12 noon, PM Modi will formally inaugurate the engineering marvel and witness its operation, flagging off both a train and a ship from the location. The bridge connects the mainland with Rameswaram island and stands as a modern symbol of connectivity and innovation in coastal infrastructure.
Built at a cost of over Rs 700 crore, the 2.08-kilometre-long bridge is equipped with 99 spans and features a state-of-the-art 72.5-metre vertical lift section. This lift mechanism allows it to rise up to 17 metres, enabling ships to pass through while ensuring uninterrupted train movement. Designed with stainless steel reinforcements, a corrosion-resistant polysiloxane coating, and fully welded joints, the bridge promises long-term durability and minimal maintenance.
PM Modi's Full Schedule
Following the inauguration, around 12:45 PM, the Prime Minister will visit the sacred Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram to offer prayers.
By 1:30 PM, he is scheduled to lay the foundation stone and dedicate a range of rail and road projects valued at more than Rs 8,300 crore to the nation.
Among these developments are major highway expansions that aim to improve connectivity across Tamil Nadu: NH-40: Four-laning of the 28 km Walajapet–Ranipet stretch, NH-332: Dedication of the four-laned 29 km Viluppuram–Puducherry section, NH-32: Dedication of the 57 km Poondiyankuppam–Sattanathapuram section and NH-36: Dedication of the 48 km Cholapuram–Thanjavur section.
These highway projects are expected to significantly cut travel time between cities, improve access to healthcare and education, and support local industries — particularly agriculture, leather, and small-scale enterprises.
In addition, the PM will inaugurate the Rameswaram–Tambaram (Chennai) train service, boosting connectivity between the southern pilgrimage town and the capital of Tamil Nadu.
With this visit, PM Modi not only underscores the cultural importance of Rameswaram — believed to be the site where Ram Setu was built according to the Ramayana — but also showcases a vision for modern infrastructure that bridges tradition with technology.
