Doc’s journey from scalpel to strokes

Retirement has given Dr Kiran Gill the opportunity to reconnect with a long-lost passion—painting. After years of dedicating herself to the demanding and time-consuming job of a doctor, she now finds herself immersed in the world of colours and canvases. As a Civil Surgeon in Ludhiana, her profession left little room for personal hobbies. But now, with ample free time at her disposal, Dr Gill has rekindled her love for art.

Her artistic journey has blossomed into what she fondly calls “Kiran’s Magical Canvas,” which reflects various aspects of life through vibrant artwork. From serene landscapes and the peaceful Gautam Buddha to graceful depictions of women, Dr Gill has created a diverse range of paintings. “I always loved to paint and even as a child, I used to scribble and draw with my pencil. Later, I started painting, but once I entered the service, everything was put on hold as I dedicated myself to my profession,” Dr Gill shares.

Now in retirement, Dr Gill has found the time to return to her art and recently held her first solo exhibition, where she showcased 26 paintings she created over the past three years. “Holding a solo exhibition is like a dream come true for me. My paintings are diverse in themes and I don’t limit myself to one subject. My artworks are filled with a variety of colour combinations that celebrate life and the beauty around us. I have also tried to capture the spirit of womanhood in my paintings,” she explains.

Beyond creating paintings for family and friends, Dr Gill also sells her work and accepts commissioned pieces. “Space for new work is made when the old ones are sold. I have no problem selling my paintings to art connoisseurs or creating new pieces on demand,” she adds. In addition to painting, Dr Gill has also discovered a love for baking, which she has made a special way of expressing affection for her family.

“Baking hits a special note in the symphony of love we create for those we care about. I bake cakes, muffins and cupcakes for my family. Special occasions in our household would feel incomplete without one of my cakes,” she says with a warm smile. Asked if she accepts baking orders like her paintings, Dr Gill laughs, “No, that’s just for my family.” Dr Gill now sees life through a new lens, embracing the peace that comes with her creative pursuits.
