5.42 lakh arrests in drug cases in 5 years: MHA
As many as 5.42 lakh arrests have been made across the country in the past five years in connection with drug cases. This was revealed in the data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
As per the ministry, a total of 4.25 lakh cases under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were registered in five years while more than 66 lakh kg of drugs were confiscated by law enforcement agencies.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said a task force on darknet and crypto-currency had been set up under the multi-agency centre mechanism with a focus on monitoring all platforms facilitating narco-trafficking, interception of drug networks and continuous capturing of trends and modus operandi.
“A dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force headed by Additional Director General/Inspector General-level police officer has been established in each state/union territory to function as the NCORD Secretariat for the state/UT and follow up on compliance of decisions taken in NCORD meetings at different levels,” Rai said.
