Sanawar Military Literature Festival: Celebrating valour, legacy & inclusion
The two-day Sanawar Military Literature Festival commenced at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, bringing together authors, military veterans, historians and enthusiasts to explore military literature’s profound impact on history, culture and society.
Welcoming the attendees, Headmaster Himmat Singh Dhillon highlighted the school’s remarkable legacy, stating, “The 178-year-old institution has produced numerous distinguished figures who served as heroes in both the British and Indian armies. This festival honors their legacy and inspires future generations.”
A key discussion, “Role and Legacy of Women in the Armed Forces,” underscored the evolving role of women in defence. Komal Chadha emphasised that women’s achievements in the military represent a fundamental shift in strategy, where competence transcends gender. The session featured senior army lady officers, decorated veterans, and wives of military personnel who shattered barriers in service.
Major Priya Jhingan, a former Sanawar faculty member and the first woman cadet in the Indian Army, lauded the Supreme Court’s ruling on permanent commission for women and the opening of NDA for women cadets. She called these historic milestones in fostering inclusivity in the armed forces.
Sqn Ldr Phagun Rishi (2009 alumna) shared how a powerful childhood moment—watching Chief of Army Staff Gen JJ Singh land in a helicopter with a lady aviator—ignited her dream of becoming Sanawar’s first IAF officer.
Speakers Mahua Pal Singh, Beeban Sidhu, and Rindy Shergill stressed the need for continued reforms and societal support to strengthen women’s role in national defense.
The OS War Heroes Samvad paid tribute to Sanawar’s fearless alumni who dedicated their lives to the nation’s defense, celebrating their leadership, sacrifices, and commitment.
The festival concluded with ‘The Clarion Call: Episodes of Bravery,’ where Lt Gen Tejinder Singh Shergill (Retd.), Col. Amresh Sharma, and Commodore Rohit Kaushik shared riveting stories of courage, discipline, and commitment, leaving the audience deeply inspired.
