Mumbai News: 87-Year-Old Woman Loses ₹16 Lakh To Cyber Fraudsters Posing As BMC Officials While Booking Dengue Fumigation
Mumbai: An 87-year-old retired BMC employee from the Khar area fell victim to cyber fraud, losing a staggering ₹16 lakh to unidentified scammers.
According to the complaint, the elderly woman was trying to contact the BMC H Ward in December to arrange a dengue fumigation service in her society. While searching for the contact number on Google, she received a call from a woman claiming to be a BMC official. The caller informed her that BMC pest control staff would only visit if she made an online payment of ₹50.
During the conversation, the call was mysteriously transferred to another number, and the fraudsters asked for her banking details. Shortly afterwards, the woman received multiple alerts from her bank, informing her that a total of ₹16 lakh had been withdrawn from her account.
Authorities suspect that the fraudsters used sophisticated cyber techniques to deceive the elderly woman. A case has been registered, and the cyber police have launched an investigation to trace the culprits behind the scam.
