Indore: Waqf, Aurangzeb Find Mention In Council Meeting, Din Occurs Many A Time
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Heated exchanges took place between BJP corporators and Congress many a time during discussion over Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC)’s council meeting over budget for fiscal 2025-26 as issues including Waqf Board land and Aurangzeb were raised by the opposition party promoting the ruling party corporators raising slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Chhatrapati Shivaji”.
However, the budget of Rs 8236 crore was passed by voice vote.
Starting his speech the leader of opposition, Chintu Choukse attacked the ruling party mentioning his disgust over the acquittal of Beleshwar Temple tragedy accused, multi-crore drainage scam and corruption. He went on to state the saffron party leaders had tendered an apology to Britons before freedom to come out of jails. This remark promoted, BJP corporators to reach in the well and seek Choukse’s apology. They said that he had made wrong attack on Veer Savarkar even as Choukse denied tendering an apology saying he did not mention any name.
After mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav’s intervention, the protest ended. Choukse also criticised the IMC for failing to control rising dog bite incidents. He praised collector Asheesh Singh for his efforts in making the city beggar-free, implying that the IMC had fallen short in its responsibilities.
“No mood to listen about Aurangzeb”
Congress corporator Rubina Khan admitted that Waqf land was occupied by some Muslims but criticised the government’s interference in religious matters, questioning why issues such as triple talaq and Waqf land were constantly raised by the saffron party government at the Centre.
BJP members responded with slogans of “Jai Chhatrapati Shivaji” and “Jai Sambhaji” and Rubina Khan mentioned the name of Aurangzeb escalating tensions in the House. BJP corporators said that they are in no mood to listen to the praises about the Mughal emperor by Congress.
Tazias can still be cooled at Karbala: Mayor
Another Congress corporator, Faujia Sheikh Alim, stirred controversy by remarking, “Two Gujaratis are selling the country, two are buying it,” a statement seemingly aimed at prominent political figures. BJP members objected strongly, leading to an uproar. The discussion also turned towards the historical Karbala land, with the BJP asserting that it was given for religious purposes and not for occupation. The mayor clarified that while Tazias could still be cooled there, unauthorised encroachments must be addressed.
Muslim corporators offer Namaaz
For the first time in Indore Municipal Corporation’s history, Muslim women corporators offered Namaaz within the premises during the session. Rubina Khan requested a five-minute break for prayers, which was granted by Speaker Munnalal Yadav.
A proposal was passed to increase the loan for Indore Municipal Corporation’s new building from Rs 250 crore to a total of Rs 500 crore for additional infrastructure development.
Proposal to Ban Unparliamentary Language
To ensure a dignified and respectful environment in the House, a proposal was presented to completely ban the use of unparliamentary language. The purpose behind this proposal is to maintain the decorum of the House and ensure that the language used by public representatives remains exemplary for the general public.
Amendment to House Timings
According to the current Municipal Corporation Council Operational Rules of 2005, proceedings of the House are scheduled to continue only till 6:00 PM. However, considering the increasing workload and demands of the council's functioning, a proposal to remove this time limit was passed unanimously by all members. From now on, the House proceedings can extend beyond the scheduled time as needed to ensure meaningful discussions on important issues. The Mayor has also instructed that a formal proposal be drafted for this amendment.
