Rohit Sharma On Verge of Overtaking Shikhar Dhawan In All-Time IPL Runs
Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma, who guided the franchise to five IPL trophies during his 10-year tenure (2013-2023), is now set to achieve a new milestone this season by surpassing Shikhar Dhawan for an outstanding record in the IPL.
Rohit made his IPL debut in 2008 for Deccan Chargers before joining MI in 2011. Now playing his 18th season, he has had a tremendous IPL career. He is 120 runs away from becoming the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history, surpassing Dhawan, who scored 6,769 runs in 222 matches before retiring after the 2024 season.
Rohit, who has played 260 matches, currently has 6,649 runs to his name, and the 37-year-old batter has 11 games left this season to achieve this milestone.
The list is headed by Virat Kohli, who is far ahead of both. Kohli has amassed 8,101 runs in 255 matches, holding the record for the most centuries (8) in IPL history with an average of 38. He also holds the record for the most runs in a single season, scoring 973 runs.
Rohit Sharma's struggles in IPL
Rohit Sharma has struggled with consistency in the IPL, especially since 2017. In the last eight seasons, he has managed to cross the 400-run mark only twice, which remains a major concern for him.
In 2024, Rohit was removed from MI's captaincy, and Hardik Pandya was appointed as the new captain. However, the team had a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the table. The franchise faced massive backlash over the decision.
In the current season, Rohit has not been performing well. In three matches, he has scored only 21 runs off 20 balls.
MI is also struggling with poor form, having lost their first two matches against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT). However, they made a comeback in their last game with a win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and will now look to build on that momentum.
