Canada Election Results 2025: Mark Carney’s Liberal Party wins Canadian election defined By Trump threats
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won Canada’s national election on Monday, pulling off a major comeback after earlier struggles. Their victory was helped by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to take over Canada and start a trade war. After voting ended, results showed the Liberals were set to win more seats in Parliament than the Conservative Party. However, it was not clear right away if they had enough seats to govern without support from other parties.
Just a few months ago, it looked like the Liberals were going to lose badly. But when President Trump began attacking Canada’s economy and even suggested Canada should become America’s 51st state, this made the Canadians angry which boosted national pride and helped the Liberals change the mood of the election, winning them a fourth term in office.
“We were almost finished in December. Now we are ready to form a government,” said David Lametti, a former Liberal Justice Minister, in an interview with CTV. He added, “We turned things around because of Mark.”
Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre had tried to make the election about former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau had become less popular after being in power for nearly ten years, as the cost of food and housing had gone up.
Poilievre, who has been criticized for not taking a firmer stance against Trump, responded with a post of his own.
“President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box,” he posted hours before polls closed.
Election day comes as the country was still dealing with the shock from a deadly attack at a street fair in Vancouver over the weekend. Because of the incident, political parties paused their campaigns for several hours. Police later said the attack was not linked to terrorism. They identified the suspect as a local man who has a history of mental health problems.
