Police crackdown on drinking in cars, public places
In a bid to curb road accidents and ensure public safety, the police here tonight launched a crackdown on booze lovers found in cars and other vehicles.
Police Commissioner Ludhiana Swapan Sharma himself led the drive along with senior police officials.
The drive, which was conducted in the entire city by making over a dozen separate teams, resulted in the arrest and detention of several individuals who were found violating the law.
“The police operation aimed to target those who consumed alcohol and drove vehicles, putting not only their lives at risk but also of other road users. The authorities have been strict in enforcing the law and those found guilty have been taken into custody and now they would have to spend a night in jail until they get bail," said Sharma.
He added that during the raids, the police checked vehicles and conducted breath analyser tests on drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Those who failed the tests were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. In this drive, the police also challaned the offenders and levied penalties on them.
“The crackdown has sent a strong message to the public about the dangers of drunken driving and drinking on roads, in the cars and at public places. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and reduce accidents," said Sharma.
