Surprise check teams to inspect roads in Delhi
In a bid to ensure better maintenance of city infrastructure, the Delhi Government has formed special “surprise check" teams to inspect the condition of roads across the Capital.
According to officials, two teams have been constituted, each comprising two senior officers from the Public Works Department (PWD). These teams will conduct unannounced inspections to identify issues such as potholes, uneven surfaces, waterlogging risks, general wear and tear, and ongoing works like strengthening, footpath and even horticulture works.
The move comes amid growing public concerns over deteriorating road stretches across the city. The teams have been instructed to prepare detailed reports, including photographic evidence, and submit them directly to the PWD’s higher authorities for immediate action.
“Accountability and timely repairs are our top priorities. The surprise checks will help us monitor the situation on the ground and ensure that contractors and agencies maintain the quality standards expected," a senior government official said.
As per an official order, exclusively accessed by The Tribune, the two teams will carry out inspection of a particular sub-division as assigned to them time-to-time and submit a report in a performa. “Such inspection will be ordered by the PWD Secretariat from time-to-time," the order read.
“The inspections are expected to cover all major roads maintained by the PWD, with random checks scheduled over the coming weeks. Based on the findings, the government plans to issue strict directions to contractors responsible for maintenance, including penalties for negligence," the official said.
Notably, the Delhi Government has made up an ambitious plan to repair 600 km roadways across the city this year of which repair work on 250 km is already underway and is scheduled for completion before the onset of the monsoon.
As per officials, the repair drive will cover multiple aspects, including re-carpeting, patchwork, pothole filling, and restoration of roads that were dug up by other departments.
