DSP’s public apology after cyclothon sparks row
An incident at a cyclothon event in Sirsa, attended by Haryana Chief Minister, has ignited controversy after a senior police officer issued a public apology to a BJP leader.
DSP Jitender Rana from Jind, deployed for law and order duty near the stage, asked Manish Singla — son of BJP leader and former Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal — to move away from the VIP area, reportedly not recognising him. A video of the interaction quickly went viral, sparking widespread debate on social media.
Responding to the uproar, DSP Rana posted a video on Monday apologising to Manish Singla. In his statement, Rana clarified, “There was no intention to insult anyone. I was simply performing my duty under high-pressure circumstances." He said, “I regret if my actions hurt Manish Singla’s sentiments. I hold Manish and his family in high regard."
Manish Singla, seated beside the DSP in the video, accepted the apology, saying, “I have no complaints against the officer. I respect the Haryana Police and am satisfied with the clarification."
However, the DSP’s public apology divided opinion online. Some users argued it was unnecessary and might lower police morale. “During security duties, everyone should be treated equally; there should be no ‘VIP’ or ‘common man’," one user commented. Another questioned, “Why should a high-ranking officer apologise at all? This sets a bad precedent."
Some suggested that bringing in officers from outside the district for such events could reduce local influence or pressure. Others felt the issue should have been resolved privately, without a public apology.
While many praised Manish Singla’s restraint during the incident, several pointed out that other officers familiar with him could have intervened earlier to prevent the confusion.
