J&K assembly condemns Pahalgam attack, pays tribute to victims

The Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Monday held a special session to express deep sorrow and strong condemnation over the terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, including 25 tourists.
The session, led by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, opened with a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events of April 22. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary put forward a resolution stressing the assembly’s commitment to peace, development, and communal harmony.
The resolution said the assembly’s united determination is to resist any attempts to disturb the region’s stability and progress.
"This House unequivocally condemns the heinous, cowardly act that resulted in the loss of innocent lives," said Choudhary. He stressed that such violent attacks the spirit of Kashmiriyat (peaceful coexistence) and the constitutional values that promote unity and peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
The assembly extended its condolences to the families of the victims and recognised the bravery of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony ride operator who lost his life while trying to protect tourists. His actions were described as a true reflection of the strength and resilience of the Kashmiri people.
The session followed an all-party meeting held on April 24, where leaders from various political parties, including the National Conference, the BJP, the PDP and the Congress, condemned the attack as an attack on Kashmiriyat and called for a full investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Members of the Assembly also pledged support to the central government’s response and called for a united fight against terrorism. The session highlighted the region’s collective grief, resilience and the importance of unity across political lines.
Through its actions, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly showed a strong commitment not only to justice but also to preserving peace and communal harmony, ensuring that the spirit of the region remains strong despite such challenges.
