Parliamentary Defence Panel To Meet Today Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

Following the Pahalgam terrorist attack last week, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence is scheduled to meet on Monday (April 28) at 3 pm in the Parliament House Annexe. This comes shortly after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.

This comes after a briefing by Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on key measures adopted to counter Pakistan in the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Three days earlier, there was an all-party meeting on the attack that was held at the Parliament premises and was chaired by the Defence Minister.

The April 22 attack, which took place around 2 PM at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, resulted in the brutal killing of 26 individuals, mostly tourists, including one Nepalese national. It stands as one of the deadliest incidents in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. In the aftermath of the attack, NIA teams have been deployed at the site since April 23, intensifying efforts to gather evidence. The Indian Army remains on high alert, conducting extensive search operations to track down and neutralise the perpetrators.

On the same day, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened to address the situation, strongly condemning the attack, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.

During the briefing to the CCS, officials highlighted the cross-border linkages of the terrorist attack. It was noted that the attack occurred against the backdrop of the successful conduct of elections in the Union Territory and its steady march towards economic growth and development.

Meanwhile, in response to the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, India has banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for disseminating provocative, communally sensitive content and misinformation targeting India, its Army, and security agencies. Collectively, these channels command a substantial audience, with over 63 million subscribers.
